Downloading files from Smartnet There are two ways to download files on Smartnet: you can do it via the menu system or from the UNIX command line (PPP users have the option of FTP as well). TO DOWNLOAD FILES USING THE UNIX COMMAND LINE: First, find the file you want to download. It is most likely that you will be downloading from your /home/username directory or from /home/public/windows or /home/public/mac. To get to the public directories on Smartnet, type: cd /home/public/windows (if you are a Windows user) cd /home/public/mac (if you are a Mac user) If you don't know the exact filename of the file you want to download, type "ls -l" or "dir" to get a list of the files in that directory. Next, you might want to make sure your file is being sent to the directory you want it in on your local computer. If you are using Windows Terminal from Windows 3.1, you will be prompted for a filename and directory when you type the download command from UNIX. You can change it then. For Hyperterminal in Windows 95 and for many other terminal programs, the directory is preset and files are dowloaded there automatically. Check your "Receive File..." settings in the "Transfer" menu to make sure the directory is set correctly. At the same time, make sure you have the correct download protocol set (Zmodem for Hyperterminal). To send the file from your Shell account to your local computer using Zmodem (if you are using Hyperterminal), type: sz filename To download using Xmodem (like in Windows Terminal), type: sx filename ****Windows Terminal on Windows 3.1 uses Xmodem only, and Hyperterminal in Windows 95 has Zmodem capability.**** TO DOWNLOAD FILES USING menu: You will first need to select the option for Transferring files from the menu. Then select the protocol you will be using (Xmodem for Windows Terminal, Zmodem for Hyperterminal). Follow the prompts from there. If you have any questions, send email to manage@smart.net.
