Useful Pine Features (a.k.a. - "Where the heck did my message go??")

This help file details only some of the many features of Pine - the
email reader Smartnet is currently using. It is not, by any means, meant
to be a comprehensive guide on "How to use Pine". The help files on Pine
should be consulted for detailed explanations. This is only intended as
a guide to the very basics, and as a response to some frequently asked
questions about Pine.

=====================
HOW DO I GET TO PINE?
=====================
There are two ways:
1) When you login, you see a prompt that looks like this:
	smarty [yourdir]:
    Type "pine" (without the quotes).
2) You could also type "menu" at the same prompt and run Smartnet's menu
   system - this is useful anyway, since it allows you to see many of the
   options you have on Smartnet. There is an Internet Mail option - scroll to
   it using the arrow keys and press enter, or type the number of the Internet
   Mail and press enter.

==================================================
WHAT ARE ALL THOSE FUNNY CHARACTERS AT THE BOTTOM?
==================================================
Those are the options for Pine. Select them by pressing the letter that
is highlighted (lowercase is fine). To select a letter preceeded by a
"^", hold down the Control key and then type letter.

====================
HOW DO I READ EMAIL?
====================
If you are a new PPP user, the first thing you need to do is read the
email that was sent to you when your account was set up. When you log in
to Smartnet, you are told if you have new mail; and when you start Pine,
you are also told that there is x number of messages in your Inbox.
(Your Inbox is where all new mail is sent.)

To get to that mail, type the letter "i" to read the Inbox mail. If you
have more than one message, you will get a list of messages - scroll to
one with the arrow keys and press enter.

=========================
WHERE DID MY MESSAGE GO??
=========================
When you finish a message, it is not deleted unless you specifically type
"d" to delete it. If you want to find it later, look in one of two
places within Pine:
1) saved-messages
   If you saved the message you were reading by typing "s", it was put
   into a folder called "saved-messages". To see a message in that folder,
   go to the Main Menu (type "m") and type "l" for a List of Folders.
   If you have saved a message, there will be one called "saved-messages".
   Use the arrow keys to scroll to it, and press enter. A list of messages
   that you saved will be there. Scroll to the one you want and press enter.
2) old-mail
   If you forgot to save, or haven't intentionally selected delete, your
   message goes into a folder called "old-mail". To get to it, type "m" to
   go to the Main Menu and type "l" for a list of folders. Scroll to the
   one called "old-mail" and press enter. All the messages you have read
   but haven't deleted will be there.

It is a good idea to periodically look through your folders to delete
messages you don't need any more (by typing "d" while that message is
highlighted). That way you don't take up excessive storage space on your
UNIX account, for which you may be charged.

===============================================
PINE SAYS IT'S DELETING MESSAGES WHEN I QUIT...
===============================================
When you read a new message, it is no longer kept in your Inbox. It is
copied to either saved-messages (if you saved it) or old-mail (if you
didn't). Pine then DELETES it from your Inbox. That is why you see
"deleting x messages..." when you quit Pine.

======================
CAN I PRINT A MESSAGE?
======================
You can print using one of two methods:
1) prYnt
   While reading the message, or while it is selected in a folder list, type
   "y" for prYnt. If your printer can recognize the control code Pine sends
   in its Print command, the message will come forth from you printer. If
   the message scrolls up the screen instead, it didn't work. Try the next
   method.
2) Export
   While reading the message, or while it is selected in a folder
   list, type "e" for Export. Type a file name for the message when asked,
   and press enter. The message will now be copied as a file to your UNIX
   Shell account, in your directory. From there, you can download it to your
   home computer using your terminal software (see the Smartnet Menu
   item on Downloading for more information). Then you can open and print
   it from any word processor, or from Notepad.

===================
HOW DO I SEND MAIL?
===================
To send a new email message, type "c" from the Main Menu to Compose a
Message. Type the address and the subject (only the address is mandatory
- though it's considered polite to include a subject), then type your
message. When you're finished, you can send it by typing Ctrl-X.

There are many menu options at the bottom of the screen to help you out
while sending a message. Try them! Pine's help menu should get you
through the basics.

Good Luck!
