Baltimore/Los Angeles Playoff Series



The #4 seed Baltimore Orioles played the #1 seed Los Angeles Disasters in a semi-final round best-of-7 playoff series. The first two games were to be played in Los Angeles, games 3-5 in Baltimore, and games 6 and 7 in Los Angeles, if necessary. The winner would be playing in the 1997 CBML World Series.

Highlights:  The game was all Los Angeles as Kevin Brown mowed down
             the Orioles' hitters.  Brown got the first 17 hitters
             befor Derek Jeter's single in the 6th.  All four of
             Baltimore's hits came with two outs in an inning.
             Meanwhile, LA had HRs from Alomar and Williams to lead
             the offensive attack for the Disasters.

Kevin Stocker led the 11-hit attack for the Disasters with a double, triple, and homerun. Manny Ramirez added 3 hits and 2 RBIs.

Clemens was rudely greeted in the first inning after two were out. Greer doubled, Ramirez singled, Williams walked, Amaro doubled, and Stocker tripled as the Disasters scored 4 times. In LA's second inning, a walk, 2 singles, and a double tired Clemens. Through 7 innings, the Disasters' Kevin Brown flirted with disaster as the Orioles left 13 men on base, including 8 in scoring position, but still had a 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Jeter, Knoblauch, and Joyner led off with walks to fatigue Brown. In came Dan Naulty, and Edgar Martinez walked, then Steve Finley tripled. After two were out, Otis Nixon singled home Finley to tie the game at 6. In the top of the 9th, Ramirez led off with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a passed ball, and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. In the bottom of the 9th, after a Jeter strikeout and a Knoblauch walk, Mike Jackson relieved Naulty. Wally Joyner singled, Edgar Martinez doubled to tie the game, Finley was intentionally walked, and Mark Johnson drove the winning run home on a pinch hit single. The win for the Orioles tied the series at 2.

Mike Bielecki and Barry Manuel shut the Disasters down in the last 4.1 innings to help lead the Orioles to a 9-4 win, and a 3-game winning streak in the series. Mark Johnson had 3 RBIs in the game.

Dean Palmer lead the way with 4 hits and 4 RBIs. The Disasters had 10 hits in the big 6th inning. Bielecki gave up 9 of the 10 hits and walked one. The win for the Disasters forced a game 7 in the series.

It was the third Roger Clemens/Kevin Brown matchup of the series. The Disasters had touched up Clemens in the previous two games by scoring 10 runs on 18 hits in 14.1 innings, but this time Clemens had his good stuff. With the score 2-1 Orioles in the bottom of the 8th, Roberto Alomar singled (single 1, out 2-20). Wilson sac'ed him to second, and Greer singled home Alomar to tie the game. After 9 innings, the scored remained tied at 2. Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the 10th. The Orioles threatened in the 11th with the bases loaded and one out with Knoblauch up to bat. A 3-2-3 doubleplay ended the threat. In the 12th, with one out and a runner on first, Steve Finley hit a HR to give the O's a 4-2 lead (Thoughts of last year's World Series came into the Orioles' Manager. After scoring twice in the top of the 11th to take a 2-0 lead in game 7, Mike Lansing hit a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 11th to win the game and the Series.). Sure enough, the Disasters loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning, and Dan Wilson rolled a ballpark HR attempt (1-2 in LA), and .... missed, but one run scored on the sac fly. Greer flew out to end the game, and the Orioles are headed to the World Series for a second consecutive year, and the third time in four years.
