The #4 seed Philadelphia Phillies Played the #5 seed Florida Marlins in a First round best-of-5 playoff series. The first two games were to be played in Florida, while games 3-5 would be in Philadelphia, if necessary. The winner would advance to the Semi-final round against Cleveland.

A Hernandez double, Boggs error, and Joey Cora 3-run HR gave the Marlins an 8-7 come from behind win to give Florida a 2 games to 0 lead in the series.
