San Francisco used solid pitching, and timely hitting to dethrone the 2003 Champion Cleveland Quirks in a 4-game series sweep. In game 1, San Francisco pitching gave up one hit in 11 innings, and the winning run scored on a wild pitch. Game 2 had Javy Lopez hitting two HRs, and Miguel Tejada hitting another to lead the Giants to a 7-0 win. In game 3, the Quirks held a 3-1 lead after 5, but doubles by Vernon Wells, Tejada and Joe Randa gave the Giants the lead that they would not relinquish. In the final game (Game 4), the Quirks led 2-1 into the bottom of the 9th. Javy Lopez homered again to tie the game. Four batters later, the winning run scored on a passed ball to give the Giants the championship.
The Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants played in the CBML Division Championship Series. Game 1 had Matt Clement facing Bartolo Colon. The teams traded runs over the first 7 innings leaving the game tied at 3. In the 8th, the Giants put 3 singles and 2 walks together to plate two runs. That was enough as the SF bullpen kept the Pirates scoreless the rest of the way in the 5-3 win. Game 2 was another close game pitting Kevin Brown against Russ Ortiz. The Giants scored first with a 3-spot in the 3rd. The Pirates closed the gap to 3-2 on singles by Aaron Boone and Barry Larkin in the 4th. That was as close as Pittsburgh got as both teams scored three runs in the 8th. Dan Kolb the the final out with the Pirates threatening in the bottom of the 9th to earn the save. With the Giants up two games to none, they put their ace, Jason Schmidt, on the mound against Jarrod Washburn. It turned out to be a pitcher's duel, but the Pirates came out on top, 3-1. The winning run scored on a BPHR to 1. With Pittsburgh having new life, they now wanted to even the series in game 4 with their ace, Bartolo Colon, on the mound. With the Giants leading 4-2 after 4 innings, the Pirates offense came to life. Richie Sexson's 2-run HR in the 5th highlighted a 3-run inning, and gave the Pirates a 5-4 lead. An insurance run in the 9th gave the Pirates a 6-4 lead as Colon threw a complete game victory. Sexson went 5-5 with a HR and five RBIs in the win. With the series tied at 2, and the home team losing every game in the series, the Giants send Matt Clement back to the mound to break the streak. After many missed opportunities by the Pirates, the game was scoreless after 9 innings. Pittsburgh's Russ Ortiz had pitched a 2-hit shutout for the Pirates, but the game went to extra innings. Vernon Wells led off the bottom of the 10th with a BPHR attempt (to 1), and got it to give the Giants a 1-0 victory. Game 6 had Kevin Brown facing Jarrod Washburn in Pittsburgh. Kevin Brown held the mighty Pittsburgh offense in check through 7 innings. Washburn was almost as strong as he threw 6 shutout innings, but in the SF 7th, Miguel Tejada hit a 2-run BPHR (to 3) to open the scoring. The Pirates' Richie Sexson hit a solo HR in the bottom of the 8th to break a 17-inning scoreless streak. In the bottom of the 9th with the Giants leading 2-1, the Pirates got two baserunners on when Rich Donnelly got pinch hitter Jason Michaels to hit into a series ending doubleplay.
The Cleveland Quirks and Philadelphia Phillies played in the TGML Division Championship Series. Game 1 had Brad Radke facing Roy Halladay. The Phillies led 4-3 halfway through when Cleveland came to the plate in the 5th. The Quirks scored 5 times in the 5th highlighted by a BP grand slam HR (to 2) by Ramon Hernandez. The Phillies couldn't overcome that lead as Halladay got the win in the 8-5 score. In game 2, the game was tied at 2 into the bottom of the 8th when Cleveland's Mike Lowell hit a 3-run HR. Brian Jordan followed with a solo shot for a 6-2 lead. The Phillies scored one in the 9th, but Foulke got the last out to give the Quirks a 2-0 series lead. Game 3 was all Philadelphia as Roger Clemens shutout the Quirks on 5 hits, and the Phillies scored 5 times in the 2nd to win 7-0. Game 4 was a rematch of game 1 starters Halladay and Radke. Both teams scored 4 times through 9 innings sending the game into extra innings. A sacrifice fly plated a run for the Quirks in the top of the 10th. IN the bottom of the inning, Betancourt and Foulke retired the Phillies 1-2-3 to save the game. In game 5, the Phillies started Vicente Padilla against Byung-Hyun Kim. A double by Ryan Klesko scored Gary Sheffield in the 2nd to give the Quirks a 1-0 lead. That was it. Kim and Foulke retired 23 of the last 24 Philly batters, including the final 19 to combine on the 4-hit shutout giving the Quirks the series victory.
The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres competed in the CBML Division Wildcard Series. Game 1 was all San Francisco as Jason Schmidt and Kevin Brown combined on a 3-hit shutout. Cliff Floyd and Scott Podsednik homered to lead the Giants' offense in the 7-0 win. In game 2, Mike Mussina was the star as he shut down the Giants' offense in the 5-1 Zoo victory. Berroa and Green homered for the winners. In game 3, Todd Helton went 3-4 with two HRs in leading the Giants to a 5-2 win. Kevin Brown was the winning pitcher for the Giants. The Zoo had the bases loaded in the 9th with two runs in, but Danny Kolb got the last out to gain the save. In game 4, the Giants looked to put the series away by scoring 6 runs in the 1st before recording an out, but the Zoo bullpen shutout San Francisco the rest of the way, and the offense had the game tied after 5 innings. Two doubles in the 6th gave the Zoo the lead and the bullpen saved the game the rest of the way. In the finale, the ace of each pitching staff faced off. With the score 2-1 in the bottom of the 2nd, the Giants scored 4 more times with two outs to take a 6-1 lead. The Zoo had baserunners throughout the game, but couldn't get back into the game as the Giants won, 7-3, to win the series.
The Philadelphia Phillies and the Seattle Slews competed in the TGML Division Wildcard Series. In game 1, the Slews scored 4 times in the 6th to take a commanding 6-1 lead, but the Phillies kept coming back, and had the go-ahead run come to the plate, but John Smoltz got the final out to save the game, 7-5. In game 2, the Phillies closed the game out in the 5th with a 7-run inning. Roger Clemens went 7 strong innings to get the win, and tie the series at 1. In the third game, Albert Pujols and Greg Myers homered early, and the Slews took a 3-0 lead into the 6th. Jim Thome tied the game with a 3-run shot in the top of the 6th, but Pujols homered again in the bottom of the 6th as Seattle regained the lead. The bullpen held the Phillies scoreless the rest of the way, including Smoltz with a 1-2-3 9th. The Phillies came back in game 4 with a 17-hit attack. Garret Anderson hit two HRs and had four RBIs to lead the Phillies to an 8-4 victory. In the deciding 5th game, Kip Wells faced Roger Clemens. Both teams hit a solo HR in the 1st, and Doug Mientkiewicz hit a sac fly in the 2nd for a 2-1 Phillies lead. The Philly pitching staff dominated the rest of the way allowing only four baserunners after the first inning to win 3-1.
The Anaheim Halos hosted the Seattle Slews in a 1-game tiebreaker to determine the final TGML Division playoff berth. Albert Pujols hit a 2-run shot in the 4th to give the Slews a 2-0 advantage. The Slews added another on singles by Koskie and Myers. The Seattle pitchers were strong as they fired a 4-hitter into the 9th. John Smoltz came in to close out the game, but gave up two runs on four hits before stranding two runners to earn the save. With the victory, the Slews will play the Philadelphia Phillies in the TGML Division Wildcard series.
