Year in Review (writeup)
Several changes occurred in the league this year. Four teams
were added with two of the current managers (Lucian Lesage and Bob
Glaub) running two teams and two new managers (Ken Robinson and
Dave (noone remembers his last name)) adopted the league. These teams
were formed using four of the original pairings (CAL/OAK for Lucian,
NYY/CHW for Bob, TOR/SEA for Ken and LAD/PHI for Dave). Teams cut to 25
and drafted to 35 (10 man minors) from all of the remaining players.
Home parks were chosen for all teams (to take advantage of the new
ballpark features and establish a park to recieve rookie players from)
and the teams were divided into two divisions. A 96 game schedule
(12 vs division opponents, six vs non-division) was established and has
become the standard for the CBML. As such, this is considered the first
"full season" and is the first reflected on the rotating trophy (which
wasn't acquired until later). The top three from each division made the
playoffs with the first place team receiving a bye, and 2 hosted 3 within
the divisions in the first round (best 3 of 5).
Dave (NORHLN) found the time requirements too demanding and resigned
as manager of Philadelphia in mid-season. Daryl Cooper assumed the reins
and finished the season.
The Lakeside Division proved to be the tougher division with 5 of the
six teams finishing .500 or better. Last year's champion Pittsburgh
(formerly BAL/PIT) surged to 67 wins, only
to be swept by the second place, and eventual champion, Baltimore. The
sixth team in the division, Houston, was in a rebuilding state and was
pummelled mercilessly by both divisions to have a 14-82 record. The dominance
of the original Lakeside teams continues through league history as they
have won all but one of the league's World Series (through 1996).
