Year in Review (writeup)
The CBML expanded for the second time in three years as Eric Bennett entered
the league as an expansion team. Eric went through the same process as Max
did when he entered the league in 1993. After the CBML's 1994 draft, Eric
selected 35 players from the remaining free agents as a starting point for his
team. Before the 1995 draft, each of the previous existing teams protected
20 players on their team. Eric, then cut his team down to 11 players, and
selected one unprotected player from each of these teams to get his roster back
to 25 players. Each of the previously existing teams, then added five players
from their team to their 25-man roster before the regular draft began.
The league moved to three divisions of five teams each with the addition of
the San Diego franchise. The divisions were created, for the most part,
geographically, still keeping the competitiveness as equal as possible. Each
team now plays every team in their division three times, and every team outside
the division two series.
Oakland, Cincinnati, and Baltimore dominated their respective Divisions with
Oakland and Cincinnati receiving First Round byes in the playoffs. Pittsburgh,
Boston, and San Francisco were the wildcard teams in the playoffs. It turned
out that the playoffs were played out exactly as the seeds were determined. #4
seed Pittsburgh beat #5 Boston, and #3 Baltimore beat the #6 seed San Francisco
in the first round of the playoffs. The #1 and #2 seeds, Oakland and Cincinnati,
both defeated their opponents in the Divisional Round of the playoffs to set
up a #1/#2 seeded World Series. Cincinnati had a 3 games to 2 lead over Oakland,
and a 1-run lead in the 9th inning of game 6, but with two out and runners on
2nd and 3rd, Cincinnati's Ken Griffey dropped a routine flyball to allow the
tieing and winning runs to score. Oakland won game 7 to win the Series.
