Year in Review (writeup)

In 1996, the World Champion Oakland Franchise moved to Montreal, and their opponent in the World Series in 1995, Cincinnati, moved to Cleveland. This was the first city move ever for both teams. The Oakland owner made several deals over the winter to get good left-handed starting pitching, and decided to use the ballpark in Montreal to help those pitchers. The Cleveland ownership drained the Minor Leagues in Cincinnati, and moved to a richer Minor League system.

Montreal entered the season as the defending World Champions, and didn't disappoint their new fans. They ended up the regular season with the best record to gain the #1 seed in the playoffs. Baltimore won the South Division for the third consecutive year, and gained the #2 seed in the playoffs. Philadelphia won the Central Division to get the #3 seeds. The wildcard teams were Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Florida.
