Year in Review (writeup)

In 1997, the 1995 expansion San Diego Padres owner, thinking the farm team was depleted, moved his franchise to Shea Stadium in New York. Also, he wanted to take advantage of the Mets ballpark.

Montreal entered the season as two-time defending World Champions. Also, they entered the season as one of two franchises that have never had a losing season. Before the season ended, the owner, Lucian Lesage, decided that this year would be his last. Also, the Philadelphia owner, Max Mortell, similiarly announced this would be his last season in the league. He had joined the league with an expansion team in 1991, and built a team good enough to make the playoffs his last 3 seasons.

Unfortunately, for Montreal, Lucian's last season would be his first losing season as the Expos finished at 46-50. This left the Baltimore franchise as the only team never to have a losing season in the CBML. Lucian did, however, finish his tenure with a .600 winning percentage over 12 seasons; tops in the CBML. Philadelphia's team also did not make the playoffs, just missing with a 50-46 record (just missed).

For the first time since going to three divisions of five teams each, Baltimore did not win the South Division. Los Angeles, with their awesome starting pitching, overtook the Orioles, and won the division by 2 games. Pittsburgh won the North, and Cleveland came back from a bad 1996 season to win the Central Division in 1997. The New York(AL) franchise made the playoffs for the first time under new ownership. Baltimore did make the playoffs as a wildcard, and the New York Mets tied for the last playoff spot with Florida forcing a tiebreaker game. New York's pitching dominated in the tiebreaker game allowing the Mets to make the playoffs for the first time in their short time in the league.
