Year in Review (writeup)
The 15th season of the CBML began with one new owner. Bernie Cunningham agreed to take over
the Florida Marlins franchise. Bernie made numerous trades, and participated in the draft, but then
quit the league before playing a game. With the season already started, a search for a new owner
began immediately. Don Acosta, who was considering taking an expansion team in the TGML, decided to
take over the team.
In a year of tremendous offensive power, the Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Boston Red
Sox were the class offensive teams of the league. Each of these teams averaged over six runs a game.
The Indians led the league in batting average and earned run average in piling up the first ever 70
win season in CBML history.
In the playoffs, only two teams that made the playoffs in 1998 made them in 1999. Cleveland and
Baltimore (the 2-time defending champions) were the only holdovers. Toronto made the playoffs for the
first time since new management took over in 1990. The New York Yankees made the playoffs for the
second time since 1995. Pittsburgh and Los Angeles got back to the playoffs after sitting out a year.
New York and Toronto won their opening round series, but faltered in the second round against
Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
Ken Robinson, Cleveland's owner, won the CBML Championship for the first time after many close calls.
