Photo of a whiskey still.

What in blue blazes! It looks like a whiskey still right in the middle of the trail. Why would the Park Service be making whiskey?

This is a 50-gallon "pot still" that was confiscated somewhere in Tennessee, I think. This type was popular, not to subvert Prohibition, but to avoid the whiskey tax that was enacted in 1791. The Blue Blazes still, which made the area infamous during Prohibition, was broken up by federal agents in the late '20s. It was much, much larger. It was so large that it could supply Washington, Baltimore, and Philadephia with all of their illegal whiskey needs. The Park Service operated this still for "educational purposes only" until about 1984 or so. The Park Service still runs educational programs at various points around the park. You can check the schedule at the Camp Misty Mount office or at the park office.

No matter how long you wait, no whiskey comes out of the still. When you have resigned yourself to the fact, press the next button.
