"A New Beginning"

by Tom Kreitzberg

-- That's that, then.

-- Yes. So far, everything's going as we'd planned.

-- From the way the sheriff was talking, it doesn't sound like there's going to be much of an investigation.

-- No. At the inquest they'll call a dozen people to testify about the times Uncle William fell asleep while smoking, and return "accidental death" without a second thought. It was thoughtful of him to provide a way of concealing his own murder.

-- Too bad the summer house was a total loss.

-- I'm sure it's all fully insured. Even if not, it's a fair trade. The summer house for his entire estate.

-- Cousin Eddie is going to be furious.

-- That's what he gets for crossing his father. We've always done everything Uncle William wanted. I'd say we deserve it all.

-- I just wish we didn't have to kill him so soon after he changed his will. It'll seem suspicious.

-- We've been over this. If he takes the new will to his lawyer tomorrow, like he said he would, then Osterly talks him out of it in ten minutes, and we're back to being the poor relations. Besides, right now no living soul knows that we know there even is a new will.

-- I wonder how long till the Birkhoffs tell someone Uncle William had them witness it.

-- I wouldn't be surprised if Osterly calls us tomorrow with a few circumspect questions. Which reminds me, we should probably put the will somewhere in Uncle William's office for him to find.

-- Good thinking. Where did we leave it?

-- He showed it to us in the summer house, so -- I don't suppose you happened to pick up the will as we left?

-- No. Did you?

-- No.

-- Oh. Then... Oh! Now what do we do?

-- Tonight, we raid Uncle William's wine cellar. Tomorrow, we start sucking up to Cousin Eddie.
